Technology is simply where this world is going. Just look at how rapidly it has wrapped itself into our society. It will only continue to do so in the future. When I was in elementary and middle school, the technology was not readily available for every class room or even necessarily the school. There's no excuse now, schools have access to a wide variety of technology and every student should be exposed to it as soon as they are able. Not only will it better equip them for the future (several of these programs they'll use all their lives), but it is a fun, exciting, and new experience. It takes learning into another dimension.
Where I stand when it comes to bringing technology into my own class room, I'm going into music so while I strongly believe technology is important, I also believe it must also be an effective way to present the material for my class. Above all, they are in my class to learn music, so it makes sense that I will focus on teaching music. That does not rule out letting them try to write something in finale or doing presentations on composers in power point. As long as it does not get in the way of the teaching objective, I am all for it and even encourage it.
It is truly amazing how quickly children understand how technology works. It is common to see children showing their parents how to fix the family computer or even work the TV remote. I have even caught myself a few times going to someone younger than me for help with some sort of technology. That's scary! I'd better get on top of the game to stay ahead!
